When people think about fly fishing Texas is probably not what they picture, but North Texas and other nearby areas offer many opportunities to wet a line and chase some fish. locally in DFW many of the lakes and rivers provide excellent opportunities for Bass and Carp in the Spring, Summer and Fall. While in the winter Texas parks and wildlife manages a rainbow trout stocking program in some of the local rivers. Year round there are great fishing opportunities to be found in the DFW area and if you are feeling more ambitious there are even more great spots a short 1-2 hour drive away. When it comes to river fishing I am a big proponent of drift fishing. It is a style of fishing from a boat or raft popular in many western rivers, and I have utilized this method from Alaska to Utah, getting to fish in waters that would otherwise be inaccessible. Texas has a combination of many rivers with long stretches without public access and strong laws allowing the use of the rivers by the public. This means that the only way to access parts of these rivers is by boat and when you drift fish you get to cover more water, most of which has very little fishing pressure.
